Android 2.1 upgrade on T-mobile Pulse!

June 11th, 2010 / No Comments » / by Jackabyte

After thinking about it for a while I decided to jump in and update my Pulse to the 2.1 Android OS (as it only runs 1.5!).

Here’s the details on how to do it if you fancy going for it as well, the download link is from the Hungarian T-Mobile site as the UK operator has yet to release the update, or any information on when/if they will be doing it!

For me it has worked a treat, so much better than the original that comes standard with the Pulse, so if you’re feeling brave then read below and dive in…

*I can not be held responsible for anything if it goes wrong, it worked for me and if you choose to try it you do so at YOUR OWN RISK*

T-Mobile Pulse 2.1 Software Upgrade Guide:

Please before installing the update, back up all your data stored, because they will be deleted during the upgrade! We are not responsible for any loss of data.

Do the update only with well charged battery or connect the charger during update! Do not remove the battery and the do not turn off the phone while flashing!

* 1 Copy the “dload” folder to SDcard from T-Mobile_Pulse_21_B815.zip.
* 2 Turn off your phone.
* 3 Turn off the device and press the red (end) + the volume up to + hold down the power button, and wait for the “Preparing to update …” message.
* 4 At the end of the upgrading, device restarts.
* 5 After phone booted, copy the “dload” folder from T-Mobile_Pulse_21_B815\CUSTOMIZED_HU to SDcard, and overwrite the existing one. Turn off the device and press the red (end) + the volume up to + hold down the power button, and wait for the “Preparing to update …” message.
* 6 At the end of the upgrading, device restarts.

What to do if the process does not restart at the end of the update?

* 1 Remove and reinsert the battery, and continue the software update as described in section * 5.

Important! After installing the new software, the available free memory reduced to 40 MB (additional storage space stored in the device).

Important! You cant go back for the older 1.5 update, after flashing to this 2.1

DIY SOS indeed…

I have decided in all my wisdom, that decorating is overrated and way too annoying. I came up with the great idea that as I’m now planning on sticking around in the UK for a bit longer now, that it would be a great idea to change my room from the old and what had now become boring wallpaper etc to something a bit up to date.

So into planning I went, I had 2 things in my room that I was going to keep and to work around… my sofa and my desk. I went trawling through a heap of websites looking for some form of inspiration and ended up finding nothing! Eventually a “design” (and I use that term loosely) came into my head and the process of choosing furniture that would make this apparent stroke of brilliance come to life began, and quickly stopped.

Since when was everything so damn expensive? I know there was the recession, but seriously? Now don’t get me wrong I like to spend my cash as quick as I earn it but when it’s costing X amount to decorate my room I have to wonder what happened. I could accept the fact that a new TV was going to cost a bit and the same for a bed, but for a set of drawers and all the wallpaper/paint/carpet the costs very quickly added up!

I looked high and low for cheaper alternatives but simply couldn’t find what I was after so I reluctantly gave in and continued with what now had become an expensive project.

It’s close to completion now, the actual wallpapering/painting has been done and now it’s just a case of getting the new carpet in then the new bed and drawers. Oh and of course then wiring up the mass of tech that will make the most of my room.

Overall it has been a bit of an experience to say the least, but I will soon have the room and setup i have wanted for quite a while :)

Android, Android, Android! Oi Oi Oi?

It’s here! I have finally got my phone which I have wanted since I arrived back in the UK.

I went for the T-Mobile Pulse, which as you can guess from the title of this post… runs the Android system which I’m basically in love with.

tm

Now for a mini review of sorts I guess?

I have found it pretty easy to just “pick up and use”. There wasn’t too much faffing around needed to get it started. You turn it on and your in a setup programme straight away, guiding you through how to use the touch screen, the touch screen keyboard, set up your google account (or link your current one to it) etc etc etc. Once that’s done, your away!

The battery life is fairly decent on it, about 2 days usage between charge, and this is from me that is constantly playing around with things or downloading more things to play around with aha.

With the 3G on, the internet and downloading speeds are fairly decent, I opted to download and use the Opera Mini browser instead of the standard one and that speeds things up quite nicely as well. You can switch to 2G mode as well which’ll save you a fair bit of battery and only slow down your speeds a little bit, to be honest i don’t really notice it that much.

The looks of the phone I love the screen is the same size as the iPhones and is very sensitive so it nice and quick. It can lag a little here and there but that might just be mine with all the stuff I already have on it.

So leaving my poor excuse of a review behind, I have noticed you can download a Wordpress app from the Android Market. So I’m hoping that will integrate pretty easily and I’ll be able to blog on the go!
